PITCH TASK 3 - Final Ideas (Ebrar)

pitch task 6 -Settings and Location (Warren)

Firstly we chose Barbican for practical reasons - we knew we wanted an estate for our genre and the Barbican is relatively near college. However, we also chose it for its aesthetic value - the 1960's Swedish architecture looks very good on camera as proven by our pictures and the garden theme in the estate gives it a more positive feel than other inner city estates.

Primrose Hill was chosen, unlike the others, mostly due to its appearance and not much else. Although Alexandra Palace provides a great view of London, Primrose Hill would give us a background of more iconic places, appealing to our audience again. It also looks beautiful at night time, which is when we want to film. Interestingly, the use of the hill gives the impression our artists are on top of the world, a theme common in pop music and hip hop also.

Most importantly, the contrast of the 'hip' Southbank and the austere government setting over the water gives us a great setting for our song as the contrast emphasises the youth in our video, appealing to our target audience again.contrast emphasises the youth in our video in the sense that the government is usually associated with men above the ages of 25-39, appealing to our target audience again".

Music consumption

Source: Yougov

Audience 2

According to YouGov, fans of our genre are female aged 25-39. I disagree with this statement to an extent, because I feel that due to the music videos and overall representation, the genre is aimed and men more than women, this is because the men are shown as rich and successful while the women are shown dismembered and not playing an actual role in the video, supporting Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory. However, after doing research into the fanbase of our genre, there are a large majority of females.

Interview with staff member at HMV:

What would you expect to see in a music video of the genre [hip hop]?

Normally, you just see the artists surrounded by girls having fun and drinking. You also see a lot of fancy cars and clothing. This is the stuff that makes rappers seem cool.

What else would you say on the genre?

I'd say it's very much based on status, what you own, and where you live. The more expensive, the better.

Definition of 'hip hop':
Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed tohip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States.

Brand Identity

Mainstream vs Independent

Merchandise is very important to an artists success as it takes them from being an artist to a brand.

When researching One Direction I found many sources that could help me. I even struggled to find their official website as they have many fan made websites. You can buy real merchandise from their website and fake merchandise from just about anywhere else.

When researching Lanterns on the Lake, I found it quite hard to find their website or any fan made websites. This immediately told me that the band are considerably less successful than One Direction. They have limited merchandise, which I could only find available on their official website. I also found that their music is only available on their website.

I'd prefer to be signed to a mainstream record label despite the fact that there are higher risks of being sold fake merchandise, your authenticity as an artist will most likely be questioned, and you have less freedom of choice as an artist, in the end, your name will be put out there, giving you countless of opportunities to create a strong brand identity.

Audience research (Warren)

On Tinie Tempah facebook page, upon going on one post I managed to find a number of women who fit the typical target audience female ages 25-39 according to YouGov.

This an audience who fits Tinie tempah typical audience according to YouGov. She is a mother who seems to live in the south of England.  She is a white women who clearly likes her British music but also her American music like Justin Timberlake.

Synergy

There are three main synergy in random access memories are the font, black background and the helmets which appear in a number of their videos.

In the their song lose yourself to dance right at the beginning 0:07 there was already a use of synergy with the the font just like the album and also the black background which is also another use of synergy in the video.

In the final of the song there was another use of synergy by the use of the helmets which also appears on the album and other songs like get lucky.

synergy

Artist: Major Lazer
Album: Peace Is The Mission
Key features: colourful background (Bright pink) ,the use of the text, and the character on the front.

This is their main single from the album

Similarities: like the album it uses bright clours as well as using the colour pink in the videos:

previous Video remake

In this video we tried to remake the first 40 seconds of Zara Larson's lush life. We used 8 base tracks within the video but we were not able to finish all of the editing.

Blogging health check 1 responce.

I understand that i am behind in the blog but I am going to catch up as soon as possible. I am currently working on the tasks you said to and will have them done. Im not sure how I mannaged to get a D but i can accept that. I dont think that i am doing as well as last year but there are reasons behind that. And out of 20 i would give myself a 7.
In terms of setting my own targets I am just trying to keep up to date with all of my tasks.

Psychographic Profile - (Ebrar)

The psychographic profile for our target audience is the Aspirers. This is because they have a need for status and they have a love for cash. Hence the fact that they are Apple Iphone users and usually drive an Audi. They read the latest magazines such as the Cosmopolitan and they like the good things in life.

This profile fits with our genre; Hip Hop and the song we have chosen; Tine Tempah - Till I'm gone, as in the video, the artists are driving fancy sports cars and are wearing branded clothes. Initially, they are promoting the rich life and they are portraying this through the costumes and props that they have used.

Who is the Audience ?

This is a YouGov profile on Tinie Tempah fans. It states that tinie tempah fans are usually female aged 25-39 living in London mostly.
However we disagree with this YouGov profile. The reasoning behind this is that as a person younger than the YouGov profile we know from personal experience that younger people have a liking towards tinie tempah.  People over 25 might not usually listen to his music. Being a student of sociology as well media we have been taught that people are known to lie on these surveys just to seem cool.

Reflection on Progress

I feel that I am progressing quite well with my blogs compared to last year. I am up to date with most of my blog tasks apart from one or two, which I will be completing very soon.
I would give myself a 14/20, as I have been using a variety of different ICT to complete my blog tasks. However, some of my blog posts can be more detailed to be at a higher standard.
The three things that I need to improve are:
  • The level of detail in my blog posts in order to get a top grade.
  • I need to try and use more different forms of ICT, apart from Prezi and Emaze.
  • To keep up to date with my blog tasks so I don't fall behind.

Synergy

Daft Punk

In class we looked at the album cover, album teaser trailer, music video (MTV version) and the original music video of Daft Punk - Get Lucky.
We found that there were similar features across all products to create a brand identity. This is called synergy.

These were the features that were consistent throughout all four products:

  • The contrast of the two helmets
  • The font
  • The black background

Blogging health check 1 feedback

Warren - 11 posts. This is a real mixture Warren! It's all a bit out of order-so it will be great when you're in the swing of blogging and the posts have more logical flow. Can you have a look at blog 9 - previous student video. I don't have permission to see it. I'm pleased with the variety of technology you've used so far.  Andrew Goodwin prezi is good, but can you please revisit Laura Mulvey and add her theory on dismembering. Also - have a look at your yougov post blog 8. It doesn't feel complete - so add the purpose and comments on both artist's findings.
Targets:
1) try to keep the blog in order from now on
2) make additions/alterations to posts mentioned above - yougov, Mulvey and previous student video

Reflection
I've actually progressed a lot last year because around this time I was on a C. However I would have given myself 11 marks because I felt like I was liking detail however my use of IT has been better than it was last year.
Three things to improve on
-keeping to an order when doing my work as it makes it easier for me and my teacher.
- Make sure I try to go into more detail so I can next time get a higher mark and also despite me using different IT skills, I think to use different software to attain a higher mark
-Finish all my blogs on time so they don't build up.

Mainstream vs Independent

Independent Label:

Advantages:
Closer to fans as they can relate and engage rather than making money off of them. The more they are closer to their fans, the more their fans feel their ideas and music to be compelling.
Easier dissemination of music - with the internet as an affordable way to promote bands and musicians, the music of these groups easily reach people with like interests in certain genres of music. Faster publication, not requiring the approval of any higher supervision.

Disadvantages:
Inconsistency - most independent groups may or may not make it even if they've gained a great set of fans overtime. Financial inconsistency could do great to make or break professional independent musicians.
Music quality and copyrights - another major concern is that without a major recording label, independent groups put their ideas at risk of being copied simply because they have no rights for their music in place.

Mainstream Label:

Advantages:
The artist will be able to reach a wider audience because the record label would have had an existing reputation.
The mainstream labels will also have enough funds to back advertising, as well as creating tours and an abundance of merchandise.

Disadvantages:
However, this can mean that the artist can lack creative freedom as they are being controlled and shaped into an 'image'.
The record label can also alter or censor the artists' album as they believe it will sell better, control access of distribution.

Evidence of Contact

My name is Charlie Ferguson I am writing to you because I am an A2 media student studying at City and Islington collage in Angel. The reason behind this email is that for our A2 Coursework we are required to create our own music video for a song of our choice (in groups), and for our choice we have chosen to use the song “Till I’m gone” by Tine Tempah and as far as I know this is the only way of getting any information on this.

Please get back in touch as soon as possible.

Mood Board

Blog Task 7 - Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze Theory

In a world where men and women are represented differently in media texts, pleasure from a  media media text comes from active male audiences and passive female audiences. The men see what they want and the women see what they want to be.

In most music videos, women are dressed in little clothing, appealing to heterosexual men and homosexual women. What makes straight women a passive audience is their aspiration to be like the women they see, as the women they see get a lot of attention for the way they look ect. Unless the video is made by a woman, women are mostly supporting characters in a music video, eg a sexy woman or a mother. A lot of the time, women are shown, but not their whole bodies. By this I mean camera shots of a woman's body part (eg. butt or boobs), but not the rest of them. This is called dismemberment as is very common in not only music videos, but media in general.

An example of this theory is Dizzee Rascal, Holiday.

The video includes main characters, four men, and supporting actors, dancing women in swimming costumes. While some might argue that the women are dressed in swimming costumes because they're at a pool party, theres no explaining why the men in the video are all fully dressed, accessories and all. The women in the video are shown doing few things, taking photos, playing in the water, or dancing for the men. In this particular video, women are purely there to look at, and it shows many examples of dismemberment.

In conclusion, i feel that Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory is still relevant to today's society as females are relentlessly shown as a Mother, or a sexual object, two roles that satisfy mens needs.

Blog Task 5 - Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin believes that most media theories don't apply to pop music videos, for example, Todorov's theory of equilibrium. This theory states that there's am equilibrium (balance) at the beginning of the text, something that ruins that, and another (or the same) equilibrium is found at the end.

Pop videos aren't made to tell a realistic story such as a TV Programme is. These music videos normally follow the lyrics of the song playing, giving a vague narrative that fans' of the song will recognise, and even gain a batter understanding of the song. Pop videos are entertaining, helping the artist gain popularity of the song. The forth wall is often broken in pop videos. This happens in many ways, the main way is through the artist looking directly into the camera, drawing the audience in. This is something we never see in a TV programme.

However, most pop videos do, to an extent, follow some mainstream media theories. As they do show a beginning equilibrium, middle problem, and an end equilibrium.

A good example of Andrew Goodwin's theory is 'California Gurls' by Katy Perry Ft. Snoop Dogg. There is no distinct narrative in the video. As far as the audience can tell, Snoop Dogg is controlling 'California Girls' in the form of a board game. The lack of narrative supports the lack of narrative in the song lyrics, as it's fun and carefree. This video was a success as it gave Katy Perry a brand identity. For a long time after the video's release, the main image used for Katy Perry in media texts was an image made from the video.
